Biography
Kidofdoom are the biggest South African, instrumental-rock band of the decade. They’re also the biggest name in Gauteng’s exploding disco-punk scene and as such their music usually finds itself somewhere in a completely unexplored wasteland between post-rock and indie-dance.
Using the typical rock set up of a drummer, a bass player and two guitarists to create music that is anything but typical rock, kidofdoom on the surface appear to be a text book example of a post-rock band. Adding synths and a Theremin to the mix and applying a completely different aesthetic to usual post-rock.
While still holding a solid air punching groove, kidofdoom manages to guide the audience through their atmospheric journey through space. Each member has their own element to add to this climactic quartet. Johan Auriacombe (drums) is the power and excitement, Ryk Benade’ (guitar and ebow) is the master and creator. Richard Brokensha (keys and guitar) is the spirit and architect. Barend Pieterse (Bass and Theremin) is the drive and the twist.
Heavy downbeat grooves and epic chord progressions create a pressure in the audiences’ body which explodes when the guitar solo sores through the crowd.
Kidofdoom shows are known to be full of passion and love for music and this allows them to build their own universe with their fans in that moment. The music has been placed into many different genres because of the diversity and knowledge of the members; there are traces of post rock, indie, classical, jazz, pop, dance, film, electronica, country, contemporary, psychedelic……but simply put it is instrumental freedom. The band is original and true, no gimmicks, no facades, kidofdoom dismantles all boundaries between their music and the audience giving an opportunity for total self interpretation.
